Martin Wong self-published books of poetry and included his writing into dozens of calligraphic scrolls, ceramics, drawings and paintings. Similarly, his paintings frequently incorporate fragments of poems from the Nuyorican poet Miguel Piñero, alongside tabloid headlines and graffiti tags.
Both poetry reading and séance, this event gives voice and new life to the artist, who died of AIDS-related illness in 1999. Performing passages from Wong’s body of written work are Josh Faught, Kevin Killian, Latosha Stimage, Linda Norton, Natalie Catasus, Sister Kitty, Steve Hyman, Tim Englert, Xiaoyu Weng, and Nicholas Andre Sung.
This event takes place in connection with Martin Wong: Painting Is Forbidden, organized by the CCA Graduate Program in Curatorial Practice.
